Wilma Mankiller
What
source did you review and who created it? What perspective do you think it is
meant to convey?
I watched the video Wilma Mankiller: Challenges Facing 21st Century Indigenous People; she was speaking at Arizona State University some time ago. Wilma was a community organizer and the first women elected to serve as chief of the Cherokee Nation. Wilma was also a member of the Democratic Party and served as principal chief for 10 years, she was an author, won several awards including Oklahoma Women’s Hall of Fame; she received an honorary degree from Dartmouth College and received the Medal of Freedom by President Bill Clinton. Mankiller has been a Native American activist for a very long time and has made great efforts in the progress of Indigenous people. The think the perspective that the video is meant to convey is that there are still issues in the 21st Century for Indigenous people and Wilma, being effected by these issues is trying to help better them and shed some light on these issues that are not necessarily in the public eye.
Why
do you think these web resources where selected and put into this course and
not others? What makes a quality academic website and do you think the website
you reviewed is one?
I believe this web resource was selected
and put into this class, as Wilma Mankiller is a very accredited Native
American activist. Wilma seems to
have made a great difference in her Cherokee Nation with ensuring that her
people are taken care as in Indian hospitals, schools, colleges, children’s programs
and many other things. She had
dedicated her life to Native American activism. I am not sure what makes a quality academic website but I
can tell you that Wilma Mankiller made that speech at Arizona State University
and even if she did not make the speech there it still would have been used in
this class I am sure. Mankiller
has persevered in these trying times for Indigenous people and she overcome
great odds especially at becoming the first women Cherokee chief so I think
that makes Wilma’s speech accredited.
What
is the purpose of making a Native American focused journal into a blog? Why do
you think I have encouraged you to share the knowledge you have gained in a
more public forum, beyond the virtual classroom?
I am not sure of the purpose other than
to gather insight from outside classroom sources. Diversity on a subject is good and to share this in a more
public forum might help to gain another perspective on the information that we
have learned.
ReplyDeleteASSIGNMENT: Write a 250-word minimum piece of writing that can be used in a blog post. Your writing must document and describe the Wilma Mankiller video in Module 5 and tell us, the readers, what you have learned from it. Do not assume that all of your readers are familiar with the resource.
Here are some example discussion points to get you thinking about your journal entry (you do not have to use them all, but they are a good starting point):
What source did you review and who created it? What perspective do you think it is meant to convey?
Wilma Mankiller video presentation of Native American History and Pan-Indianness. The perspective is from a Native American speaker with many masters degrees and educational background to go with life experience. The speaker's perspective is that the Native American people are an International heritage which has been disgraced worldwide. The ways in which the Native American people in other parts of the world have recently experienced trauma as it relates to the removal of children from their tribes, and other forms of inhumanity are abhorrent. The gender issues specifically to women in the tribal communities is a magnified level of discrimination that what the non-tribal whites experience, and this too is being addressed at an international level.
Why do you think these web resources where selected and put into this course and not others? What makes a quality academic website and do you think the website you reviewed is one?
This web source was put into this course and not others maybe because the speaker has educational approach to teach the listeners about what the historical and current issues are for the subject and not a political speaker. The quality of the website is good and the website or the film reviewed is recent. The value of the message is that it captures what a first person's experience is in the contribution to pan Indian culture.
What is the purpose of making a Native American focused journal into a blog? Why do you think I have encouraged you to share the knowledge you have gained in a more public forum, beyond the virtual classroom?
A Native American focused journal is a way to describe what is being learned and how it is being learned for the course. The sharing of how each person learns from the sources made available is another way to process in thought what is being conveyed in the course study. Each person's interpretation is helpful in that people will take away from a learning experience different things. The way that others in the class have learned something or find certain things interesting makes the subject easier to understand.
Well I reached out to see who Chief Wilma Mankiller was. The first thing that I learned is she is no longer with us. This lady had a full and prosperous life that her ancestors would be proud of her. And her family.
ReplyDeleteShe became sick and after two terms as Cherokee Chief did not run but continued the fight.
I watched her video and came away with the viewpoint that her issues were indigenous people in poverty world wide, the continued taking of Native lands with no restitution and misuse of women.
My spirit, could feel her strong sprit, for the person she was.
It really is amazing and shameful that so many of the problems they faced hundreds of years ago are still going on today. Thankfully they have strong advocates, such as Wilma Mankiller, who are willing to dedicate their lives to fight against these wrongdoings.
