What source did you review and who created it? What perspective do you think it is meant to convey? Why do you think these web resources where selected and put into this course and not others? What makes a quality academic website and do you think the website you reviewed is one? What is the purpose of making a Native American focused journal into a blog? Why do you think I have encouraged you to share the knowledge you have gained in a more public forum, beyond the virtual classroom? This assignment was a little confusing for me. After reading the instructions I the source to be researched was the talk by Chief Wilma Mankiller. The questions made me think I could pick from any sources that were offered in this class. I did a search on Chief Wilma Mankiller so that I could get a feel of the person. At an early age Chief Mankiller caught the urge to help her people. She moved back to her land of birth, Oklahoma. Chief Ma...

The source I chose to talk about is the speech given buy Wilma Mankiller to ASU entitled: Challenges Facing 21 st century Indigenous people. This is the viewpoint of a nation leader talking about how we a people can live together. She talks about how the relationship that natives have with the earth is not just for native peoples, but for the good of all people and more importantly, the animals we share the earth with. She tells of a story where out of a crowd of people, not one person who was passing over the river looked at the sunset. Mankiller was trying to convey how people take a lot of natural beauty in the world for granted, and a lot of the time do not notice it around them. This web source is important because Wilma Mankiller in her speech, talks about pretty much everything we talked about in this course. She goes through the entire history of indigenous hardship and does a good job connect...

I think that these sources were selected because many of them offer personal accounts of actual people from varying tribes. A good academic source does not necessarily have to be a refined one. I would actually argue that a good source is an unfiltered source. As in, the person compiling the data and recording the interactions between people often put their own personal spin, which could corrupt the information. With technology, we have the opportunity to actually see first hand without any sort of medium, other than recording devices, to see and hear people, which is incredible. Wilma Mankiller is a Former Cherokee Nation Principal Chief. She is a well spoken and articulate individual. A point that she would like to stress is that she does not speak for all Native people, but she has an interest in all the different tribes. The native people are deeply intertwined with the natural world, which she and other indigenous people revere....

What source did you review and who created it? What perspective do you think it is meant to convey? I watched the video Wilma Mankiller: Challenges Facing 21st Century Indigenous People ; she was speaking at Arizona State University some time ago. Wilma was a community organizer and the first women elected to serve as chief of the Cherokee Nation. Wilma was also a member of the Democratic Party and served as principal chief for 10 years, she was an author, won several awards including Oklahoma Women’s Hall of Fame; she received an honorary degree from Dartmouth College and received the Medal of Freedom by President Bill Clinton. Mankiller has been a Native American activist for a very long time and has made great efforts in the progress of Indigenous people. The think the perspective that the video is meant to convey is that there are still issues in the 21 st Century for Indigenous people and Wilma, being effected by these issu...

M5 – Blog Post Question #3 asks us to reveal the purpose of making a Native American focused journal into a blog, and to share why that is important. My answer to that would be that, as with any focused learning it is important to be able to incorporate the learning into our own words, thoughts, and actions. A blog may be one way to express how the learning has affected us. Throughout this course my attention has been on quality, as opposed to quantity. I feel like there is so much history and so much to really learn that I have needed to look more deeply at little snippets, so to speak, to gain a fuller understanding of how they have affected me. I also feel like it is important to have a breadth of knowledge, and this course has certainly provided that opportunity as well. Treuer’s Atlas of Indian Nations, by itself, is years’ worth of study!! But we’ve also had access to so many other works and great resources that will keep me busy! In the Wilma Mankiller video, wh...

Wilma Mankiller's presentation on the video was sponsored by Arizona State University and the Heard Museum. The Heard Museum is in Phoenix, AR and it has a great collection of American Indian Art. Wilma Mankiller is the former principal chief of the Cherokee Nation and she served in that position for ten years. She is also an internationally known Native rights activist. Wilma Mankiller has 18 honorary doctorates, was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Clinton, and coauthored a book, Mankiller: A Chief and Her People. In the beginning of her presentation she noted that she did not speak for all indigenous or Cherokee people since there is an enormous diversity among indigenous people. She did go on though to point out that indigenous people did have things in common and the most important was that their lives were connected to the Earth and that they had an interdependence with all living things. They participate in ...
