- What source did you review and who created it? What perspective do you think it is meant to convey?
- Why do you think these web resources where selected and put into this course and not others? What makes a quality academic website and do you think the website you reviewed is one?
- What is the purpose of making a Native American focused journal into a blog? Why do you think I have encouraged you to share the knowledge you have gained in a more public forum, beyond the virtual classroom?
This
assignment was a little confusing for me. After reading the instructions I the
source to be researched was the talk by Chief Wilma Mankiller. The questions
made me think I could pick from any sources that were offered in this class.
I did a
search on Chief Wilma Mankiller so that I could get a feel of the person. At an
early age Chief Mankiller caught the urge to help her people. She moved back to
her land of birth, Oklahoma. Chief Mankiller ran for the office of Deputy Chief
and won. Later she was promoted Principle Chief. I this office she was very
well liked because she focused on the Nations government, healthcare and
education. She turned down a third term due to health issues. (www.biography.com)
The speech she gave in Arizona, “Challenges Facing 21st Century Indigenous People” was very informative. The introduction stated that she was the holder of eighteen doctorate degrees. She was inducted into the Oklahoma Hall of Fame and also many other organizations. Also, she received the Presidential Medal of Honor. She was asked to speak I think, because the museum wanted to her a person of her statue impart some of her great knowledge.
Chief Mankiller spoke about the need to preserve the land, the Native American culture and most importantly the need to eliminate indigenous peoples all over the world.
The film was made by the University of Arizona Libraries. The apparent purpose of this film is to convey the Native People are still among us and that their greatness is due in part to their ability to hold onto their culture. I felt this web resource was appropriate for this class because it fit into the genre of Native American culture preservation. I feel the concept of blogging, so that the world can see our classes ideas on Native Americans is a novel one. I never saw where any one responded to any posts but classmates but that is not to say that at some time in the future someone may not respond. On the web page that the speech was on, someone thanked the sponsors for posting the speech.
