Tribal
Sovereignty: The Right to Self-Rule
I used for my online resource the video, Tribal Sovereignty: The Right to
Self-Rule. This video was created by Tribal Eye Productions. I picked this
video because it helped me to get a feel of what sovereignty means. There are four
recognized governments in the United States, tribal, state, county and city. An
Indian Tribe constitutes a government. Sovereignty for Indian Tribes paves the
way to govern themselves. The overall purpose for this video is to explain
sovereignty and how it relates to Native Tribes.

When I look at the overall scheme for this class it becomes clear
to me that if I make an outline for this course I would make four categories. A)
Who occupied the US first? B) Early Native Tribes (who, what when where) C) The
arrival of Europeans and the overtaking of Native Indians lands, D) How Native
Indians have risen from the ashes and are making their own place in the United
States. In order to support my view, I offer all the information that was given
to me for review in this course. I will cite, (Treuer, the introduction), Treuer,
chapters one to eight), (Treuer chapter one) and lastly for the video, (Tribal Sovereignty: The Right to Self-Rule)
Has the information you have read thus far changed, in some
way, your view of native communities? Provide at least one specific example
and citation from the M3 Online Resources to support your opinions.
By all means my knowledge of Native
Americans has been expanded and increased. I can never look at a western again
and just assume Indians were made and killed a bunch of white people. I now
know that due to lying and stealing the Native Indians were only protecting the
lands they felt the Gods gave them. I guess the thing that impressed me a lot
was the video of the elder woman who had all the young family around her and
they had to beg her to tell them a story---in her language no less. (Iisaw:

I find that as we continue this course, I am learning new things about sovereignty as well. Although, to be fair, I basically knew nothing before starting this class. Learning there are four sections of government, tribal being one of them was eye-opening.
ReplyDeleteI grew up watching westerns with my father, he's a big John Wayne fan. I agree, I will never be able to watch them the same way again, now knowing what I know about the injustices brought upon the Native Americans. I knew they were treated unfairly, but I wasn't aware of the extent of it all.
