m3 Academic Journal Blog

The source that I chose to talk about from module 3 was “Turtle Talk”. This is a blog of Michigan State University about tribal law policies. The site has announcements and job postings for native American peoples as well as links to texts, dds, articles, and more. This is a selection because it is a real life blog of native people and through this site you can learn more about Native people. Mostly it is a place to learn of native law. My views have changed after visiting thus site because it is a good example of seeing native voices come together to spread information.

Chief Joseph was born Hin-mah-too-yah-lat-kekt, or Thunder Rolling Down the Mountain in 1840 in Northeastern Oregon, then known as Wallowa Valley. He was known as Joseph after his father, Joseph the Elder, was took the name when he was baptized in 1838. His father was one of the first Nez Perce to convert to Christianity, and was a supporter of the tribe’s longstanding peace with whites. This all changed in 1863 when the federal government took back almost six million acres of this land. Joseph the Elder felt betrayed and blamed the United States. M3 - The Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA)

The resource I’ve examined is the Tribal Courts of New York , specifically the Indian Child Welfare Act. As an extension to Child Protective Serves, ICWA provided greater consideration to the child’s future well-being with regard to culture, language, and community. As part of our reading resources this is an important one because it gives an understanding of the conditions under which children are considered to be placed under care of the state, or in this case – the tribe. I find this act heartening due to the consideration it provides, but I remain dismayed that it needed to be put into effect to begin with.
