M1 250 word Blog - Indigenous Indians

250 word blog M1

In module one, we have read a variety of personal stories, cultural contributions, and accounts of Native American Culture. From these variety of sources, I have found that the most interesting is the storytelling which speaks of what is to be and has not been. The ability for the Indian to know what is going to happen years before it occurs makes them wise. The reference to Spirit as what the Christian culture refers to as similarly the Holy Spirit is not that different. The comparison of the two cultures in the assigned reading is reflective of the knowledge of the wise tribal elders that the white culture would be sharing beliefs with Native American culture as they descended upon the lands of Indians. This historical content is supportive of how these things were expected to occur and what happened. The innocence of the Indians based on their lack of technological or mechanical evolution shows that the advancements of the White man were perceived as harmful. The socialization of the Indian a form of corruption to the innocent Native peoples. The Indian  - or Indigenous terminology is a version of the indigenous. The introduction of these teachings regarding what is and what is not appropriate seems to be somewhat variable. There are some who are native and are offended, some who are less offended. The way that the culture has and is changed by the white man is apparent in most of the content of the art, video, media, and written contributors. The autobiographical content is useful in seeing first perspective of someone who is currently attesting to the culture. Interpreting bias from the historical accounts of Native American history is like learning two different versions, the version which has been created by the historian and the version that actually happened.

  1. I agree that it is sometimes frustrating to dissect the voices and bias that occurs in written historical accounts. Yes, it is like learning two different versions. What Nabakov brings to the table in his work is the active voice of each Indigenous Person narrating a story in their own voice. It's a fresh perspective and gives us, the reader, the ability to now choose a new interpretation of the story. There is real value in considering a story through multiple lenses. I am finding the Reflexivity exercises do just that. It's a bit forced, at first, but if I go back and reconsider something in a new way or from a different aspect then I feel as if I am expanding my overall understanding.

  2. According to what I have read the white culture thought they were better because they thought to have dominion over Nature making them ,in there words not mine, superior.
And as for the "holy spirit" being the same as what they realized as spirituality my understanding is that white men believed that they were better than all of the tribes and white men believed it was their responsibility based on "christ's teachings" to steal all the land .

  3. I agree that you have to look at all sides of a story. Reading the narratives in Nabokov's book really sheds some like on not just what the Native Americans endured by the hands of the white man, but their emotions towards those actions.
